About
Silverlens presents Dina Gadia, Yee I-Lann, Maria Taniguchi, and Mit Jai Inn in All States No State. In S.E.A., artists often come together through informal networks, establishing communities and collectives that become long-term structures of artistic collaboration and exchange. Such is the practice of all three artists. The title is taken from a series of flags of imagined countries made by Gadia.
Dina Gadia (b. 1986, Pangasinan) is an artist based in Manila with a cult following. Known for satire, she makes paintings and prints sourced from comics, schoolbooks, and magazines from the American post-war period. She slices, then reconstructs narratives of a tricky relationship that was troubled from the moment it began. Recent exhibitions: City Prince/essess (PdT, Paris), Navigating the Abstract (Silverlens, Manila). She received the prestigious Thirteen Artists Award from the CCP in 2018.
I-Lann Yee (b. 1971, Kota Kinabalu) is a mid-career artist who grabbed the moment of the pandemic to stay home and make work with her communities. Always making waves across southeast Asia, she is presenting a new series of photographs titled Measuring Project. Recent exhibitions: Borneo Heart (SICC, Kota Kinabalu), Until We Hug Again (CHAT Mill6, Hong Kong), and the ongoing APT (Brisbane).
Maria Taniguchi (b. 1981, Dumaguete City) makes works encompassing painting, sculpture, video and installation. Her practices investigate space and time along with social and historical contexts. She won the Hugo Boss Asia Art Award in 2015. Recent exhibitions include 12th Gwangju Biennale: Imagined Borders, Gwangju Biennale Exhibition Centre, South Korea (2018); 21st Biennale of Sydney, SUPERPOSITION: Equilibrium & Engagement, Museum of Contemporary Art, Australia (2018). Her work is held in a number of collections including the M+ Museum, Hong Kong; Kadist Art Foundation, San Francisco; QAGOMA, Brisbane; and the K11 Art Foundation, Shanghai.
Mit Jai Inn (b. 1960, Chiang Mai, Thailand) is a widely respected senior Thai artist known for his boundary-defying painting and socially engaged practices. Showing pieces from his Actants series, which are paintings of woven ribbon and canvas. Mit’s collaboration with light, color, labor, and time correspond to metaphysical, political and social constructions of power and belief. Recent exhibitions: Dreamworld (IKON Gallery, Birmingham), Art on Farm (Jim Thompson Farm, Thailand).
Projector X: James Clar (b. 1979, Milwaukee), is an American artist of Philippine heritage. Living between New York and Manila, he uses light and technology systems to tell stories of significant human experiences.
